The vision of CARISA is:
‘To make a meaningful contribution in the eradication of cancer’
The mission of CARISA is:
‘To improve the health and well-being of South Africans by promoting, coordinating and facilitating cancer and cancer-related research’
The main goals of CARISA, as articulated in the founding charter, are to
- develop a core strategy to foster collaboration between South African researchers and those abroad;
- minimise unnecessary duplication of effort, in terms of research projects, funding and fundraising;
- provide a research granting process and other support mechanisms for researchers;
- facilitate collaboration among individual researchers united by a common goal and drawn together by their own mutual compatibilities;
- bolster its funding base by identifying national priorities and niche areas as a basis for raising funds; and
- to cultivate a relationship with the South African Government, and to play a meaningful role in the development of a national cancer research agenda that informs policy around the identification and management of cancer.
