about
the novel drug development platform
This project seeks to establish a scientific biotechnology infrastructure in South Africa for research and development of novel medicines and tonics from traditional medicinal plants used in southern Africa.
It brings together leading institutions, viz, the South African Medical Research Council (MRC), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), University of Cape Town (UCT), University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban (UKZN), University of Witwatersrand and scientists with the necessary expertise for capitalising on the country's rich botanical, scientific and human resources.
This project was awarded to the consortium in 2004 by the Innovation Fund Technology Missions, now under the management of the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) which seeks to fund high risk, early stage, technology development research with a potential for future/broad economic benefits.
