national
non-fatal injury surveillance system (NANFISS)
As
few hospitals capture injury statistics, the National
Non-Fatal Injury Surveillance System (NANFISS) initially examined
the distribution of injury caseloads at all public sector emergency
care facilities in order to select sentinel institutions
to reliably reflect future problems and regional trends. The
caseload information was used to select sentinel sites, but
funding constraints have limited current data collection activities
to just two of the forty-one sentinel sites. There were
also interesting and unexpected injury cause differences between
the provinces, although this could have been due to inter-provincial
differences in access to health care and health seeking behaviour.
